KU agrees to highway proposal on condition of compensation

Cautions Assam Rifles, govt over stalled memorial park

Mon, April 22 (MExN): The Konyak Union on Monday agreed to the proposed National Highways to be constructed along the stretches of the Nagaland Foothills Road in Mon district, provided that land-affected owners receive compensation as mandated under the National Highways Act and prescribed norms.

The decision was taken at a meeting convened at the Konyak Union headquarters, Mon on April 20. The meeting was attended by representatives of Konyak Union Naginimora Unit, Konyak Union Tizit Unit and land-affected owners along the foothills road of Mon district, according to a press release issued by the Media Cell, Konyak Union.

The meeting deliberated on road development in the Tizit, Tekun, Upper Tiru, Lower Tiru and Naginimora belt, with participants discussing the additional land requirement for the proposed National Highway construction in the region.

However, the community expressed strong resentment over the poor quality of construction work and sluggish progress on the existing foothills road construction. The community from the foothills road region had pointed out that even after more than a year since construction commenced, the road remains unusable for commuters and the general public, causing significant inconvenience to the local populace. Particular concern was raised over the RCC Bridge, Chainage 16, which remains incomplete.

The Konyak Union had earlier highlighted the issues with the Nagaland government during a meeting held in Kohima on April 7, 2026, it stated. The Union urged that construction work on the Foothills Road be expedited at the earliest to ease the hardships faced by residents of the region.
Meanwhile, a meeting was held in Mon on April 21, between the Konyak Union, Commanding Officer of 42 Assam Rifles Col Imliakum Keitzar, Inspector General IGAR (North) Maj Gen HS Mavi and Brig RN Singh, DIG 7 Sector AR, to resolve a long-standing dispute over objections raised by the Assam Rifles against the construction of the memorial park in Mon town.

The Konyak Union, in a press release issued by its Media Cell, stated that the site permit for the memorial park had been duly allotted by the Government of Nagaland, yet the objections raised by the 42 Assam Rifles have continued to stall the project for years.

The Union further stated that it had “officially reiterated and apprised” the Nagaland government of the matter since February 2026 through proper channels to bring the matter to a conclusion, but no official response had been received. “The government is neglecting its responsibilities and lacking concern for the community,” the Union said, calling the situation “a serious matter related to safety concern for the generation to come.” Questioning the government’s priorities, the Konyak Union asked, “What could be more important for the community than this issue?”

“The subsequent meeting with the Indian Security officials in Mon had reached a stalemate on the negotiation that had brought no logical conclusion on the matter and fixed the next meeting,” it stated.

The Union urged the government to expedite resolution of the matter at the earliest to prevent any deterioration of the situation in the region, cautioning it “cannot tolerate anymore” delay. It further added that it would “not be held responsible” should any untoward incident arise once it initiates construction.
