Mon, October 14 (MExN): The Konyak Union (KU) has directed all Naga Political Groups (NPGs) to “desist from parading in uniforms or carrying arms within Mon district.”
“Under no circumstances shall any faction make forceful demands, abduct persons, or engage in threats or intimidation,” stated a resolution adopted during an emergency meeting held at KU Mon Headquarters on October 13.
The meeting further resolved that failure to comply with the directive would prompt an immediate declaration of non-cooperation against the offending NPG(s).
“In such an event, the KU will organise and mobilise Konyak youth to deploy to designated locations to confront and neutralise violations,” it added.
The union convened the meeting following the hostage-taking of a KU-unit official by NSCN-K (Yung Aung), who was taken across the border for “reasons best known to those responsible.”
Presidents and Executive members of the Konyak Union from Tobu, Mopong, Longchang, Aboi, Chen, Mon, Longshen, Phomching, Tizit, Wakching, Naginimora units, and representatives of Konyak Civil Society Organisations attended the meeting.
Earlier, the KU had issued a 24-hour ultimatum on October 12 demanding the release of the unlawfully held official.
The union identified the detained official as Konwang Konyak, President of KU Aboi Unit, and confirmed that he had been safely released.
The KU placed on record its appreciation to the KU Phomching Unit, Konyak Union Myanmar, Longwa Village Council, the Angh of Khanmoi Village (Myanmar), and the leaders of Gozu Village (Myanmar) for their prompt and effective intervention that secured the release.
The Union also acknowledged the NSCN-K (Yung Aung) for cooperating with its directives and facilitating the release.
