Dimapur, April 16 (MExN): Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK), Dimapur organised a Bhumi Suposhan programme at Chümoukedima village to promote soil health and sustainable, climate-resilient agricultural practices among farmers.
The programme focused on sensitising farmers on the importance of soil health management for long-term productivity and sustainability. Participants were provided with practical demonstrations and scientific advisories aimed at improving soil fertility, optimising nutrient use, and enhancing crop yields in an eco-friendly manner.
As part of the initiative, vermicomposting technology was promoted, with vermicompost pits and bio-fertilisers distributed to farmers to encourage cost-effective and environmentally sustainable farming practices.
A key highlight of the programme was an interaction with progressive farmer Vilhuca Thou, who has developed a diversified farming model incorporating sugarcane cultivation and processing, along with crops such as dragon fruit, tomato, maize, wheat, and watermelon. He has also integrated vermicomposting into his farming system, demonstrating a resource-efficient approach to sustainable agriculture and income diversification.
Dr Phool Kumari, Senior Scientist and Head, KVK Dimapur, interacted with the farmers and outlined various technological interventions and outreach initiatives undertaken by the KVK. She also visited farm units, including sugarcane processing facilities and crop fields, and appreciated the farmer’s efforts in adopting innovative practices.
She stated that KVK Dimapur will continue to collaborate with line departments and institutions to strengthen capacity building, technology dissemination, and the promotion of sustainable agriculture for improved livelihoods.
A total of 32 farmers, including women participants, attended the programme, which is part of a broader outreach initiative being conducted across villages in Dimapur, Chümoukedima, and Niuland districts since March 19.
