Phek, September 14 (DIPR): Nagaland State Commission for Women (NSCW) in collaboration with National Commission for Women, New Delhi, organized a Legal Awareness Programme at Phek Badminton Stadium, Phek on the theme “Know Your Rights” on September 13.
NSCW Chairperson, Sano Vamuzo in her keynote address highlighted the status of the Nagas in the past saying that we came from a practice of headhunting to the present modern world with a drastic change in such a short span of time. The changes in Naga society especially with the advent of Christianity had revolutionized our lifestyle with the essence of forgiveness, love and peace as taught by our Christian values and principles. She also said that, not only women, but men too need to know their rights because they are complimentary and need each other in exercising their legal rights.
‘We should never shy away from demanding our basic needs’
She also opined that as the government is supposed to look after the welfare of its people, so we should never shy away from demanding our basic needs such as, right to shelter, food, education, health, electricity, water etc., whenever we feel deprived of.
Later in an interactive session with the public, Sano Vamuzo mentioned that though Nagaland has been declared as a dry State since 1989 in reality it is one of the wettest States in the country. Alcohol abuse have given reason raise to immoral activities, broken homes, mental frustration etc., therefore she called on the gathering to join hands together to fight this problem. Giving her mind on the random use of mobile phones by young children, which have led the young minds to have access to unlimited pornography, immoral phone relationship and other related menaces, she stated that the women commission was seriously planning to approach the education department and authorities to ban the use of mobile in Schools and Institutes. On the issue of rape which has become very common in the present day, she appealed to the relatives of the rapist not to shield or protect them but instead to condemn and to let law take its own course of action by handing them to the authorities.
Phek Deputy Commissioner, Mikha Lomi in his short speech said that NSCW had done commendable job to combat social menace against women and appreciated NSCW. He also called upon the participants to create awareness message to grass root level for emancipation of women’s right. He further added that our society have to realize the potential value and the important role of woman without which our society would not have developed this far.
Resource persons, ADC & Session Judge, Khape Koza spoke on the topic “Statutory Rights of Women” and “Protection of Women from Domestic violence” while Phek SP, Vika Sumi spoke on the topic “Role of Police in Safeguarding Women’s Rights”
The daylong session was chaired by NSCW Member, Abeni TCK. The invocation prayer was pronounced by PTBC Pastor, Rev. DN Soho while the vote of thanks was delivered by NSCW Member, Ellen Konyak. Village leaders, functionaries, representative from women organization, government officials, women NGOs besides others attended the legal awareness programme.
