DIMAPUR, APRIL 6 (MExN): Drawing attention to the statement made by Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio during the inauguration of Dzüdza Bridge yesterday, Leader of Opposition I Imkong today said since the Advocate General of Nagaland had given his legal advice by stating that the Legislative Assembly should wait for the reconvening of Parliament on May 10 and redefine ‘Office of profit’, it was not necessary to debate. Rio had earlier said that the Opposition had no point to discuss during the emergent session of the Nagaland Legislative Assembly on April 4 last.
“Further it is to be understood that the Act of 1964 not only made any mention about the exemption of the disqualification of Leader of Opposition but also does not mention about Chief Minister nor for the Speaker,” Imkong said in a release. In view of the legal advice given by the Advocate General the Nagaland Pradesh Congress Committee had decided not to make any further clarification as it was in line with the decision of the Congress Legislature Party meeting held on April 3, he said. “I would not like to refer the matter till the Parliament comes up with re-definition of office of profit.”
Imkong said he did not, in a press conference earlier called by him, elaborate much on the position of the Leader of Opposition in the Legislative Assembly “because it is to be understood that the Essence of Democracy is to have two leaders,” namely the leader of the majority party, the Chief Minister, and the leader of the minority party, the Leader of Opposition.
