‘Let us build our land with the spirit of the Scouts and Guides’: Dr. Jamir

NBSG ushers in centenary celebration of the world Guides movement

DIMAPUR, OCTOBER 22 (MExN): The year 2010 is the centenary year of the formation of the ‘Girl Guides’ movement. Nagaland also takes pride in celebrating a noble and historic event which occurred a century ago, thousands of miles from here at London.

The state branch of the Bharat Scouts & Guides – Nagaland State Bharat Scouts & Guides or NBSG – commemorating the celebration conducted a vibrant kick-off programme of the ‘World Guiding Centenary Celebration’ (2010-12) at the DDSC Stadium, Dimapur on Friday, October 22. The centenary will be celebrated over three years.

“The Guiding 2010 Centenary will comprise celebrations around the world in which Girl Guides and Boy  Scouts celebrate 100 years of the world Guide and Scout movement”.

Dr. SC Jamir, former governor of Goa & Maharashtra and former chief minister of Nagaland graced the programme as the chief guest. Dr. Jamir is also a life member of the NBSG.

“I am indeed delighted to associate myself in the kick-off programme of the World Girl Guiding Centenary celebration to day at Dimapur”, said Dr. Jamir in his address. “On this auspicious day, let us pay our solemn homage to the founder of this great organisation Robert Baden-Powell…”

Baden-Powell formed the ‘Boy Scouts’ in 1908 and the ‘Girl Scouts or  Guides’ in 1910, which is now popularly known as the World Scouts & Guides movement. Dr. Jamir said that it is an organisation which encourages girls to develop their interests and abilities while giving them opportunities to help others.

“It also encourages them to become responsible citizens… All of you are very lucky to be part of this great organisation”.

On an introspective note Dr. Jamir said: “Let us now examine the kind of world/land in which we live – the fair Nagalalnd…”

Stating nature has bestowed upon the Nagas a beautiful abode – “an integral part of God’s wonderful creations”, yet, Dr. Jamir said the Nagas have lived for long in “blood and tears”.

“My dear Girl Guides, may I take this opportunity to ask all of you to look into the future with hope and great expectations?” he posed, while adding “It will be a folly to treat the future as an extension of the past”.

“…We desperately try to cling on the past… instead of working of renewal, through adopting to change”, Dr. Jamir averred. “As result especially the Nagas are placed in great dilemma”.

Now is the time to embark on a new venture of “peace, progress and prosperity” in unity, he hence challenged.

“Let us build our land with the spirit of the Scouts and Guides to do our duty to God and our country… Let your compassion and commitment be the cornerstone of our Naga society”.
