Let’s face issues together: Jagat

Kohima/Dimapur, July 28 (MExN): The new Governor of Nagaland Gurbachan Jagat today sought the people’s hand to work together on finding solutions to common issues pertinent to the state. Governor Jagat has assured to be with the people in whatever way he can, for peace and prosperity for  the state.   

Gurbachan Jagat was today sworn in as the Governor of Nagaland by Chief Justice of Guwahati High Court, Justice Chelameswar, in the Durbar Hall of the Raj Bhavan. Among those  present in the ceremony were the chief minister, Council of Ministers, legislators, NGOs, bureaucrats and top army officers. Governor Gurbachan Jagat is also the Governor of Manipur and has been entrusted additional charge of Nagaland.

Jagat said there are some difficult issues “which have continued to haunt us for the past many years,” likewise in other parts of the country but have successfully overcome them. “I am sure that together all of us can work on these issues and come to a solution. Such a great culture and civilization has to take its rightful place in the vanguard of the states of our country and progress into a highly developed and economically well off state so that our children can reap the benefits of peace, good education and health facilities and lead a life of dignity and self-respect,” he said in a message addressed to the people. “ I am sure that all these will come to pass in the not too distant future and the troubles of the present day will vanish as if they had never existed,” he said.

Greeting the people on his taking charge as Governor of Nagaland, Jagat expressed happiness and his being honored to have been given the opportunity to serve the people of Nagaland. “It is for the first time that I have stepped on to the sacred soil of Nagaland which is one of our most valued states,” Governor Jagat said.

He has sought the hand of the people to working together for the sake of peace and prosperity for Nagaland. “I call upon each and every one of you, in whichever field of society you are in, to come together for the sake of peace and prosperity of Nagaland and for contributing towards the goal of developing Nagaland into one of the leading states of India. I assure you that I shall be with you every step of the way to help in whatever way I can. I end with a prayer to God to guide us all in reaching our goal of a peaceful and prosperous Nagaland,” Jagat said in his message.

A Profile of the Governor 
Born on July 1, 1942, Governor Gurbachan Jagat is an IPS (Retd) batch of 1966, Punjab Cadre. Among other capacities, Governor Jagat was the Director General of the BSF from December 2000 to June 2002 and the DG of Jammu & Kashmir from February 1997 to December 2000. He also headed the intelligence and security apparatus as DIG (1982–1990). He also held the post of chairman of the Union Public Service Commission from April 2006 to June 2007 and was its member from August 2002 till March 2006.

Governor Jagat is a recipient of Padmashree in 1987, President’s Police Medal for Distinguished Service in 1992, and Indian Police Medal for Meritorious Service in 1982, J & K Government ‘Police Officer of the Year’ in 2001, Paschimi Star, Sangram Medal, Special Duty Medal (Punjab and J&K), Aantrik Seva Suraksha Medal, Operation Rakhshak & Operation Vijay medals.
