Jalukie (MExN): A live 11 KV electric wire, which had snapped, and which was lying perilously on the road, claimed the life of a minor and grievously injured another at a place located between Tening and Nsong recently. The area falls under Jalukie subdivision of Peren district.

The deceased girl identified as Kilungpuile died on the spot and was reported to have been burnt severely while two of her friends, whose identity could not be ascertained. One is stated to be in critical condition at the Tening Hospital. Both the girls are from Ngam village. An elderly man named Rangtauzam who was accompanying them saved the life of the injured, rescuing her with a stick. Rangtauzam sustained injuries in his leg.

Ngam villagers are out rightly protesting the negligence of the electrical department. It is learnt that authorities had earlier been asked to do something about the wire.

The irate villagers are even threatening to torch the department’s offices if justice is not meted out. Accompanied by public leaders, members of the Jalukie, Peren electrical department reportedly went to meet the villagers. Callousness on the part of higher ups of the department has also been alleged. Even after three months of the transfer of the previous junior engineer who was posted at the sub division, no replacement has taken place.

No substitute was posted either. Sources said that the family members of the deceased has demanded for a post under the accused department as an act of compensation and the said department has assured to look into the matter as top priority.

It may also be mentioned that, the Villagers of both Nsong and Ngam have submitted a memorandum to the concerned department and to other higher ups of the department.
