Dimapur, April 13 (MExN): The Lok Janshakti Party (Ram Vilas) has on Monday urged the President of India to review and cancel existing ceasefire agreements between the Government of India and armed insurgent or terrorist groups, citing concerns over national security and democratic principles.
In a representation addressed to the President, the party’s national secretary S Richard Humtsoe said such agreements, though aimed at promoting peace and dialogue, may in certain circumstances embolden unlawful elements and compromise the safety and rights of citizens.
The party expressed concern that such arrangements could adversely affect the liberty, dignity and security of peace-loving citizens, and may undermine the sovereignty and democratic framework of the country.
“In a vibrant democracy like India, the protection of fundamental rights—including the right to life, liberty and security—is paramount. Any agreement that is perceived to undermine these principles or create fear, instability or inequality among citizens warrants careful reconsideration,” the representation stated.
The party requested the President to direct a thorough and transparent review of existing ceasefire agreements with armed groups and assess their impact on public safety, rule of law and democratic values.
It further urged that necessary steps, including cancellation or revision of such agreements, be taken if found inconsistent with the interests of the nation and its citizens.
The party also stressed that peace efforts should be aligned with justice, accountability and long-term national integrity, adding that the appeal was made in the interest of safeguarding democracy, restoring public confidence and ensuring a secure and dignified life for all citizens.
