Rolls out door-to-door waste collection
Longleng, July 2 (MExN): The Ward Waste Management Committee (WMC) in Longleng has approved a series of measures, including door-to-door collection of segregated waste, user charges and penalties for littering, to strengthen sanitation services in the town.
According to a DIPR update, the decisions were taken at a consultative meeting chaired by Additional Deputy Commissioner and Administrator of Longleng Town Thungchanbemo Tungoe.
The meeting discussed sanitation-related issues and deliberated on the early implementation and activation of sanitation services across commercial and residential areas of Longleng town.
Addressing the meeting, the chairperson briefed members on various public utility services, the proposed door-to-door waste collection system and the strict implementation of the Solid Waste Management Rules, 2026.
Following detailed deliberations, the committee decided to implement door-to-door collection of segregated waste in all wards of Longleng town with immediate effect. Waste will be collected from 5 am to 9 am every Monday, Wednesday and Friday, with collection vehicles stopping for at least 20 minutes in each ward.
The committee fixed a monthly user fee of Rs 50 per household, of which Rs 10 will be reserved for the operations of the Ward Waste Management Committee.
The WMC will collect the user fee, deposit it in the designated bank account and submit the payment acknowledgement to the Administrator's office. A QR code will also be provided to facilitate payments, while cash payments may be made directly at the office.
The committee was also tasked with identifying waste collection points, assessing the number of households in each ward and submitting the details to the administration. It will also establish elevated secondary waste storage platforms wherever space is available.
The meeting advised all households in Longleng town to maintain dual-bin segregation of waste.
It was further decided that the WMC and the Longleng Town Council would impose penalties under the Solid Waste Management Rules, 2026, for littering, improper disposal of biodegradable waste, including grass, mud and animal waste, at secondary storage sites, and for burning waste.
The Urban Local Body (ULB) will purchase segregated plastic waste at the rate of Rs 10 per kilogram, the committee decided.
The meeting also resolved that in cases of non-payment of the user fee, ward authorities and the departments concerned would refrain from issuing essential documents and extending public distribution system services until dues are cleared.
A complaint redressal cell will be set up immediately at the Administrator's office, while the WMC will be informed promptly in the event of vehicle breakdowns or any disruption in sanitation services.
