Educational institutions across Wokha District observed ‘Black Day’ on April 14, as notified by the Lotha Students’ Union (LSU), with participation from schools throughout the district.
The observance was held in remembrance of late Chumdamo Tungoe of Phiro Village and late Thungkhomo Ezung of Longsa Village, who laid down their lives on April 14, 1977, during a tragic incident of police firing at a peaceful procession organised by the union.

In compliance with the notification, schools conducted silent prayers to honour the martyrs, reflecting on their sacrifice and the enduring values of justice, freedom, and equality. Students and teachers gathered in unity, maintaining a respectful silence as a mark of tribute.
As part of the observance, LSU officials visited the families and resting places of the departed, where wreaths were laid on behalf of the Union. This was followed by a prayer service invoking God’s peace upon their souls and strength for the bereaved families.

The Union expressed profound gratitude for the sacrifice of the martyrs and reaffirmed that the LSU stands as a living memorial to the cause for which they made the ultimate sacrifice. It further assured the families of its continued solidarity and support, stating that their sacrifice shall remain forever honoured in the annals of the Union.
Meanwhile, on April 13, the executive members of the Lotha Students’ Union undertook a social work initiative at the Martyrs’ Park Memorial as part of the pre-observance activities. The district-wide observance was carried out peacefully.
