Mokokchung, September 6 (MExN): The 14th edition of the Luke Sasong Memorial Volleyball Tournament (All Nagaland Open) is scheduled to be held from September 16 to 18 at the Multi-purpose Sports Complex here.
The biennial state-level championship is organized by the Luke Sasong Sporting Association under the aegis of the Mangmetong Students’ Union, with an aim to foster sportsmanship, youth empowerment, and communal unity.
The tournament commemorates the legacy of late Luke Sasong (Sasongdangba) of Mangmetong village (born September 9, 1913), a pioneering educationist, freedom fighter, and Christian leader who died at the age of 27. Sasong served as an early Naga student leader from 1932 to 1935 and was elected President of the Ao Students’ Conference in 1938. American missionary teachers conferred upon him the name “Luke” in recognition of his compassionate and wise character.
This year’s edition features a total prize purse of Rs 1.85 lakh. The champions will take home a cash award of Rs 80,000, while the runners-up will receive Rs 50,000. The third and fourth-place finishers will be awarded Rs 25,000 and Rs 15,000, respectively. Individual honors—including best setter, best spiker, and player of the tournament—carry a cash prize of Rs 5,000 each.
Two-time defending champions MH-10 Kohima, who claimed top honors in 2022 and 2024, will be aiming to secure a third consecutive title amid rising competition across the state.
The open tournament is accessible to all club teams across Nagaland, with the organizing committee specifying that participating players must be Nagas of Nagaland. Registration forms are available at G-Sports, Mokokchung, with September 10 set as the deadline for submission. Further inquiries can be directed to 7005511900, 8257926541, or 6009260066.
