
Dimapur, September 12 (MExN): The Kerala Club Kohima celebrated Onam Festival, the biggest harvest festival of Kerala with enthusiasm and joy at Highland Park, Kohima on September 11.
A press note received here today stated that the programme began by lighting the traditional festival lamp , Nilavilakku and laying of Pookkalam.
Cultural show, sports, competition, Onasadya (Onam feast) and merry making were part of celebration as well as felicitation to the HSLC 50th rank holder Rintu Mariam Raju from NBSE 2010 with cash and citation.
Moreover, Babu Kuriakose unfurled the club's flag. President of Kerala Club K.Issac, delivered the welcome speech and vice president Shaji K delivered the vote of thanks. Maj Gen (Retd) Eppen Jacob Kochekkan, Chairman, Ceasefire Monitoring Group and other dignitaries attended the feast. Wishing the Onam greetings, Eppen Jacob commended the activities of the club.
The note also mentioned that Onam is celebrated during the first month of Malayalam Calendar - Chingam – falls in August – September months. Onam festival is associated with the legend of King Mahabali, who ruled the land a long time ago, gave the people a golden era in Kerala. The King is so much attached to his Kingdom and it is believed that he comes annually to see his people living happily. It is in honour, King Mahabali, Onam is celebrated. People of all religions, castes and communities celebrate the festival and also helps to create an atmosphere of peace and brotherhood.
It also stated that Onasadya (Onam Feast) is the most favourite and delicious part of the Onam festival. It’s a feast which if enjoyed once is relished for years and people of Kerala wish to depict that they are happy and prosperous to their dear King Mahabali, whose spirit is said to visit Kerala at the time of Onam. Legend goes that Mahabali who was so attached to his people that he requested Gods to allow him to visit Kerala every year. People of Kerala wish to convey that they are enjoying the same age of prosperity as was witnessed during the reign of King Mahabali by preparing a grand Onasadya.
Also, floral decoration, laying the Pookkalam, is a symbolic way to welcome the mythological King Mahabali, who is supposed to visit his subjects during the festival.
Kerala Club Kohima was established in the year 2005, as a social organization, comprising Malayalees in Kohima, with the purpose of promoting and encouraging a sense of fellowship, unity, mutual respect, welfare and co-operation among its members. It also keeps good relation and co-operation with other organisations and also extends help and co-operation whenever needed.
