Manipur Governor given additional charge of Nagaland

Manipur Governor Ajay Kumar Bhalla has been given additional charge of Nagaland following the demise of Governor La. Ganesan on August 15.

“Consequent upon the demise of Shri La. Ganesan, Governor of Nagaland, the President of India has appointed Shri Ajay Kumar Bhalla, Governor of Manipur, to discharge the functions of the Governor of Nagaland, in addition to his own duties,” a press communiqué from the President’s Secretariat said on Saturday evening.

Ganesan, 80, passed away in Chennai on Friday while undergoing treatment at Apollo Hospitals for a serious head injury sustained after a fall at his residence on August 8.

He had taken oath as Governor of Nagaland on February 20, 2023. In his tenure, he also served as the Governor of Manipur and briefly held additional charge of West Bengal.

On Saturday, Nagaland Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio, along with Deputy Chief Ministers T R Zeliang and Y Patton, Chief Secretary Sentiyanger Imchen, Director General of Police Rupin Sharma and other officials, attended the funeral in Chennai.

“His humility, dedication, and selfless service to the people will be remembered with deep respect and gratitude,” Rio said in a post on X.

The Nagaland government has declared a seven-day mourning period from August 16 in memory of the departed Governor.
