Fearing a rise in COVID-19 cases, the Manipur government on Friday ordered indefinite closure of the schools for Classes-VI to VIII with immediate effect. However, the order issued by the state School Education department allowed online classes to continue.

As per the order, the decision to close down all government and private schools for Classes-VI to VIII was in view of the second wave of COVID-19 pandemic and to avoid any kind of unwanted consequences.

As per the order, physical classes for class-IX and XII will continue by strictly observing the approved SOP and guidelines framed by the state government. The classes for students of Class-V and below will be through online mode as notified earlier, the order reiterated.

The schools in the state were reopened for class VI to VIII from March 8 last after remaining closed for almost 11 month. The state government decided to re-open the schools in the backdrop of declining trend of daily COVID-19 caseload since November last year.

However, the state is witnessing a gradual upward trend in the daily caseload in the last few weeks with two digits in the last three consecutive days.
