Medziphema seek justice for BPL Ration Card holders

Dimapur, July 15 (MExN): An open letter appended by GB Medziphema Town Ward No-1, GB Tsuuma village, Chairman Medziphema Village Council, GB Socunoma village and Chairman Sirhima village, and addressed to the Additional Director (department of Food & Civil Supplies) was issued to the media today. The letter stated that the recent conduct of renewal of BPL Ration Card and its effect has been the most undemocratic and unconstitutional exercise witnessed by the people of Medziphema in recent times.
BPL Ration Cards are issued to the people living below poverty line by the government in its welfare programme for the upliftment of the living standard of the poor and needy. However, the letter stated that recently so many genuine cards were rejected during the process of renewal of cards leaving the poor people poorer than they were before. “So many of these people totally depend on the ration supplied by the government for their day-to-day survival, which they get only through their cards. As such, rejecting or depriving them of their cards amount to snatching away their daily bread which cannot be justified in anyway. Instead of deletion of BPL Ration cards, more fresh cards have been anticipated to be issued to the needy on account of the ever increasing population and unemployment,” the letter stated.
Also, it was claimed that the incumbent distributor of Medziphema Division (S.K) is acting in a very autocratic and oppressive manner with supply of ration not reaching the people on time and whereas, every day card holders are entitled to a specific amount of ration, so many do not get their shares due to the busy schedule of the Distributor. It was further claimed that what has been sanctioned by the department do not reach the deserving people intact and only about one fourth of it reaches our division for reasons best known to the Store Keeper. This meager amount is not sufficient for distribution in our division.
Therefore, the open letter issued by Medziphema representatives questions the concerned department as to why so many genuine BPL Ration Cards were denied renewal and rejected particularly under Medziphema division and why fresh cards were not issued in conformity with the need of the population of the division. It also questioned whether the “Supply Distributor” is the authority to cut the supply according to his whim and fancies, and also asked what his job description is that takes him to other “busy schedules” when the public waits for him for their ration for hours together. Moreover, whether the department concerned checks the manipulative practices of the Supply Distributor and endorses the same.
The letter further questioned why the ADC Medziphema is being silent over the BPL Card issues, when the people of Medziphema look upto him for their rights and for justice and why he didn’t rise to the occasion when gross injustices has been committed and the rights of the people denied by an individual officer for so long.  It was demanded to the concerned authority (s) to reply to the questions stated above and to immediately look in to the matter and initiate necessary measures for early redressal of the grievances of the poor people of Medziphema division in particular before the situation takes any unwanted turns.
