The bodies of two persons who drowned on Thursday have been recovered on Friday from the vicinity of the places of occurrence in Garo Hills.
On Thursday, one Nipha Marak (21), the son of a former Sports officer of the State, had accidentally fallen into the Ganol River near Pelga Dare while he went there with some friends. The incident took place at about 3 pm with a search and rescue operation conducted by the Fire and Emergency Services (F&ES) and SDRF being undertaken immediately after information of the mishap was relayed.
Nipha was a resident of Dakopgre in Tura, West Garo Hills.
While there was no breakthrough made by the rescue teams on Thursday, the body of the 21 years old man was recovered on Friday afternoon at about 3 pm.
“His body was recovered near Chibbonggre in the river stream near Damalgre this afternoon. All formalities were completed before the body was handed over to the family of the victim,” confirmed the Superintendent of Police, West Garo Hills district, Dr MGR Kumar.
In another incident, North Garo Hills police recovered the body of another 20 years old man about 300 metres from the place where he allegedly jumped into the river Chidrang, near Resubelpara in the district.
The 20 years old was apparently suffering from a mental illness for the past four years.
“He reportedly jumped off the bridge yesterday at about 2 pm after which search operations were conducted with the help of local villagers. His body was recovered this morning, about 300 metres from where he jumped to his death,” said the Superintendent of Police of North Garo Hills district, Abraham T Sangma.
The deceased was a resident of Jampara under Mendipathar Police Station in North Garo Hills.
