Memorandum

To, The Hon’ble President of India, Shri Pranab Mukherjee

(Through Governor of Nagaland and forwarded by Deputy Commissioner, Dimapur, Nagaland)   Subject: MEMORANDUM   Hon’ble President,

Taking serious note of the incidents that has happened in two of the most prestigious Universities in our Country, we the Alumni of Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) and Hyderabad Central University (HCU) Nagaland Chapter, jointly organized a SOLIDARITY WALK AND SIT-IN PROGRAMME on the 22nd February 2016 in Dimapur, Nagaland with the three broad objectives:

  1. Against curtailment of freedom of Speech and Expression.

2. Against growing intolerance in the Country

3. Against attack on Media and Press Freedom   That sir, India being the largest democratic country in the world, we too believe in the ideals of India as a democratic and secular country. We believe in the great Constitution of India; we believe in the plurality and diversity of India; we believe in a free India where everyone is entitled to express one’s opinion and ideas freely.

It is really saddening that the democratic and secular fabric of India is being threatened especially in prominent educational institutions - institutions that has been producing one of the finest students, scholars and academicians over the years in our Country; institutions that has helped develop critical thinking in the minds of the students towards promoting diverse cultures of knowledge and knowledge of cultures.

The greatest challenge that confronts India as a democratic and secular Nation is the growing incidents of intolerance and violence in the Country and it is OUR APPEAL TO ALL THE CITIZENS OF THE COUNTRY to resort to peace rather than violence as envisaged by our own great father of the Nation Mahatma Gandhiji towards safeguarding and defending India as a secular, diverse and democratic Nation. Therein lies the voice of hope and justice, the voice of truth and liberation and the voice of freedom emerges.

That Hon’ble sir, as you head the largest democratic Nation, India, we pray for a strong and unified India as envisaged by our great Rabindranath Tagore -

“Where the mind is without fear, and the head is held high Where knowledge is free… Into that Heaven of freedom, My father Let my country awake.” Long Live India!!! In Camaraderie and Solidarity,

(Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) Alumni Nagaland) (Hyderabad Central University (HCU) Alumni Nagaland)
