‘Maybe time has come to end. This happened near Commissioner Rest House, Mokokchung. This is real, it happens today,’ was the ominous message shared on several WhatsApp groups on October 15 along with a video of a ‘miraculous’ electric pole “oozing” copious amount of water.

The danger was real as the chance of electrocution with water being an easy conductor of electricity. However, a miracle and impending judgement day, it wasn’t.

It was just a case of defective PHED pipe line underneath.

“Perhaps a water pipeline must have burst below the pole foundation” was immediate reaction from an Electrical Engineer when consulted to explain the ‘strange’ phenomenon.

A statement attributed to Mokokchung Power Department clarified the doubts later in the evening.

“Action taken. Jet of water from a defective PHED pipe hitting the insulators and conductors at the top of the pole making it appear as if water is flowing from the top of the pole,” it stated.

In the video, the leaks appear to be coming from the top, with the camera angle doing the trick.
“Seems there was a damaged pipeline near the post. So the world will continue as it is,” a member in one group cheekily commented upon the clarification.

The Power Department’s version was later affirmed by the executive engineer, PHED Department Mokokchung to The Morung Express.
