Timely intervention by police on Sunday saved a house from torching by a furious mob in Manipur’s Thoubal district.
Locals of Moijing area of Thoubal district attempted to torch the house of a suspect behind the death of a four-year-old boy.
The boy who went missing on January 19 last was found floating in a pond, some 100 meters away from his house on Sunday morning. Locals found the dead body of the boy floating in the pond. As the body was found to be fresh, the family members rushed him to Thoubal district hospital where doctors declared him brought-dead.
Locals, who suspect the boy being thrown into the pond after killing, stormed the house of a suspect from the same locality. When the suspect was not found in his house, the angry locals tried to set the house on fire. However, the timely arrival of a police team foiled the attempt.
Police, in their bid to put locals under control, fired several rounds of tear gas shells. There was no report of any serious injuries among the locals in the police action. Later, the police picked up two other persons of the locality who were accused as suspects involved in the child murder by the locals for interrogation and investigation.
Locals strongly suspect the boy was murdered after kidnapping and keeping confined at an undisclosed place for days.
A local leader, talking to reporters, said that they believed that the boy was murdered and demanded a thorough investigation to find out the culprit(s).
