Mizoram MP urges Centre to raise Mizo Regiment

Aizawl, October 16 (NNN): Mizoram has urged the Centre to raise a Mizo regiment in the Indian Army under the Union Defence ministry.

According to an official statement, Rajya Sabha MP from Mizoram, K Vanlalvena had raised the issue with the Centre on Thursday.

The official statement said the MP met Union Defence Minister Rajnath Singh and urged the latter to raise a Mizo regiment under the Defence ministry or Mizoram Rifles under the Union Home ministry.

K Vanlalvena reasoned that Mizoram is located in international boundary and as such raising a Mizo regiment or Mizoram Rifles will be in the interest of the national security. The MP also said that such an initiative will also ease the unemployment problem in the state, according the statement.

Mizoram shares a 404-km international border with Myanmar and a 318-km border with Bangladesh.

The Mizoram-Myanmar border is guarded by Assam Rifles while the Mizoram-Bangladesh border is guarded by the Border Security Forces (BSF).

Mizoram is also located in a vulnerable point when it comes to the issue of drugs. Heroin is often smuggled into the state from Myanmar.
