Mokokchung declared as Tapioca District

MOKOKCHUNG, APRIL 17 (DIPR): The 2 day Agri & Allied Conference and Seminar on the “Year of the Farmer 2006” organized by the Government of Nagaland concluded on April 12 at Mokokchung. 

After the completion of all the technical sessions, a plenary session was held in which a Resolution Committee representing one farmer member from each village was set up with DC Mokokchung, Abhishek Singh as the Chairman.

Accordingly, the following resolutions were adopted and will be presented to the Government of Nagaland for action plan. The Resolutions were divided into Short Term, Medium Term and Long Term objectives.

1.    Short Term Objective/Resolutions: (Crops)

As a focus crop, Tapioca will be the main crop under the Department of Agriculture for Mokokchung district and declared as Tapioca District and Ginger as the second focus crop. 

2.    Medium Term Objective/ Resolution:

Under the Department of Horticulture, Passion fruit will be cultivated as the main crop by the farmers of the Mokokchung district.

3.    Long Term Objective/Resolutions:

Bamboo and Tea plantation will be taken up by the farmers of Mokokchung district.

General:

Short Term Objective/ Resolution:

1. To discourage the import of wheat bran. This demand can be replaced by local produce.

2. Tapioca as projected (in the short term resolution)

3. APMC demand for enforcement of APMC Act at the earliest.

4. Revamping of MPCSs for surplus agro product.

Medium Term Objective/Resolutions:

1.  To construct farmers hostel at APMC Complex.

2. To promote self sufficiency and pork production, one village in every range will be encouraged for piggery farming, for which the successful villages will be provided with incentive from the District Administration.

3. To regulate cattle grazing to enable farmer to opt for the second cropping.

4. A pilot project on Muga Production for one village in every range is recommended for experimental purpose. 

5. 1 unit of Vermi Compost /Bokashi in every village will be installed in Mokokchung district under the technical guidance of Soil and Water Conservation/Land Resource Development Departments with the financial support of District Administration.

Long Term objective Resolution:

1.    To ban poisoning of rivers with chemicals and explosives for conservation of Bio-diversity.

2.    To protect migratory birds in Mokokchung District.

3.    To earmark an area in every village of Land Shaping/Terracing for sustainable agriculture and food security with the support of VC/VDB.

4.    Rural Primary Market  (RPM)  to be constructed in all potential  villages to construct Agri- Link roads to the potential production areas, which have not been covered under normal scheme.

5.    Cold storage to be considered at the latter stages after seeing the performance of the farmers/ surplus production.

6.    In view of all the farming practices deliberated above, introduction of micro irrigation system viz, Trip, Sprinkler irrigation need to be adopted as this systems are highly efficient 

7.    To form marketing Co-operative societies in Mokokchung district.
