Mokokchung police intercepts trucks with 4000 kg smuggled areca nuts; four arrested

Areca Nut weighting approximately 4000 kilograms (2000 kg on each vehicle) concealed in a hidden storage built under the trucks’ body floor was seized by Mokokchung police.

Mokokchung, September 23 (MExN): The Special Operation Team, led by the Additional Superintendent of Police of Mokokchung, intercepted two trucks and arrested four individuals on Sunday night for alleged smuggling of approximately 4000 kilograms of Areca Nuts.

The interception took place around 11:20 PM on September 21. The trucks, bearing registration numbers AS 01 SC 9997 (Eicher) and AS 26 AC 0758 (Ashok Leyland), were found to have the Areca Nut weighting approximately 4000 kilograms (2000 kg on each vehicle) concealed in a hidden storage built under the trucks’ body floor, Additional SP Police & PRO, Mokokchung said in a press release. 

The four accused have been identified as Sanowar Khan (32), Akbar Ali Dewan (21), Nur Mharnmad Ali (22), and Jahidul Islam (27), all residents of Assam.

The Areca Nuts are suspected to be smuggled since the drivers failed to produce any valid challans/documents as required by law, the officer added. 

The smuggled items were seized at PS-II Mokokchung following all the legal procedure in the presence of accused persons. In this connection PS-II General diary entry has been entered vide PS-II GDE No. 05/2025 Dated 21/09/2025, it stated. 

The seized items and the accused have been handed over to the Deputy Commissioner of Customs (Preventive) Division in Dimapur for further legal action.
