Mon, July 27 (MExN): A prayer and candlelight service was held at Konyak Baptist Church, Mon, on Sunday in memory of those who lost their lives in the catastrophic landslide that struck Defence Colony in Mon town on July 19.
Organised by the Konyak Baptist Church Mon (KBCM), the memorial service was attended by Deputy Commissioner Wennyei Konyak, NCS, public leaders and residents.
Addressing the gathering, the deputy commissioner thanked KBCM for organising the service and expressed sympathy to the bereaved families and those injured in the tragedy. He urged them to remain strong and seek God's strength and comfort.
Konyak also expressed solidarity with the families of the two victims whose bodies remain missing despite six days of continuous search and rescue operations carried out by government agencies and local residents using available machinery.
Calling on people to remain united during times of crisis, he urged citizens to work together to rebuild the parts of Mon town damaged by the landslide.
The deputy commissioner commended the efforts of the 42 Assam Rifles, Nagaland Police, the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), non-governmental organisations and volunteers from different wards for their cooperation and sacrifices during the rescue operations.
He also appealed to the people to uphold humanity, remain united and be better prepared to face such disasters in the future.
Konyak thanked the state government led by Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio and the nine elected representatives from Mon district for their support during the tragedy.
During the service, Yinai, husband of late Pomei and the lone survivor of his family, shared his testimony. Minister C L John and his wife were also present.
Short addresses were delivered by Konyak Union president Yamao Konyak, Konyak Students' Union president Temwang Konyak and the president of the Eastern Naga Students' Federation (ENSF).
The service concluded with a message of hope and a candle-lighting ceremony led by Rev. H. Moba Konyak, pastor of KBC Mon.
