More rain and colder days ahead: NSDMA

Kohima, February 21 (MExN): Winter is once again set to make its presence felt in Nagaland as the week started off with unusual spells of rain, cold weather as well as snowfall in several locations across the state.

On Monday, the Nagaland State Disaster Management Authority (NSDMA) in coordination with Regional Meteorological Centre, Guwahati forecasted that the minimum temperature in several parts of the state including Kohima, Kiphire, Phek, and Zunheboto districts are expected to hit 0°C.

Over the next few days, it said that some parts of Kohima district are expected to hit minimum temperatures as low as 0°C and maximum temperature of 11°C. Phek is expected to have a minimum and maximum temperature of 0°C and 12°C respectively, while Zunheboto district could see minimum and maximum temperatures of 0°C and 18°C respectively.

The NSDMA informed that Kiphire is also expected to have a minimum and maximum temperature of 0°C and 14°C respectively and Tuensang is expected to have a minimum and maximum temperature of 2°C and 16°C respectively.

These are some of the districts in Nagaland where extreme changes in weather phenomena have been observed, it added.

Overall, it said that the state is expected to have patchy rainfall on February 21 which will clear up starting February 22. There may be partly cloudy skies with dry and sunny weather over the state from February 22 to 25 with marginal increase in day and night temperatures.

Rainfall activity is expected to make a comeback around February 26 for a short duration which will be light and scattered rainfall and is not expected to have major impact, it said.

Districts like Peren, Kohima, Phek and Kiphire are expected to experience scattered rainfall at few places around February 25, the NSDMA’s forecast started.

Informing this in a press release, the NSDMA urged the public to be vigilant and not to shelter under large trees and near the river banks to prevent unnecessary risk to life from lightning and flash floods. It also requested all the District Disaster Management Authorities and other line departments who are responsible to attend to any emergencies caused by natural calamities to be on alert to save lives and properties during the period.
