MoU for construction of 5000 MT capacity godown in Zunheboto approved

The Department of Food and Public Distribution (DFPD) under the Union Ministry of Consumers Affairs Food and Public Distribution (CA, F&PD) has approved a Memorandum of Understanding for construction of 5000 MT (metric ton) capacity godown in Zunheboto district of Nagaland, informed an update from the department. 

It was included in the MoU approved for construction of 4 such godowns (warehouse) between Food Corporation of India (FCI) and Central Warehouse Corporation (FCI) in India.

“Secretary, DFPD has approved an MoU between FCI & CWC for c/o godowns through CWC funds on FCI land at 4 locations [2 in Ladakh UT (Zanskar & Drass of 3,340 MT capacity each) and 2 in North East (5000 MT capacity at Zunheboto, Nagaland & 1670 MT capacity at Namsai, Arunachal Pradesh),” stated the official Twitter handle of the department in a tweet. 

“Food security will be promoted in Zunheboto which is situated in the heart of Nagaland & has population of 140757 persons predominantly of Sumi tribe. Namsai is a newly created district (2014) of Arunachal Pradesh with population of 95950 persons,” it added. 

It must be mentioned here that during the ‘year-end review 2020’ of the DFPD on December 29, it was informed that “Storage & Godown” land measuring 2.99 acres 2.99 acres has been taken over on lease by GM (R), FCI o September 24, 2020 for 5000 MT capacity in Zunheboto, Nagaland under Central Sector Scheme. The April 6 update seems to be a natural progress of the process.  

Meanwhile, the Minister for CA, F&PD Piyush Goyal today reviewed the modernization plan of CWC on Tuesday. 

A statement issued by the ministry via the Press Information Bureau informed Goyal in the meeting called upon the corporation to double its warehouse storage capacity by end of year 2023 and achieve a turnover of Rs 10000 crore by the Financial Year 2024-25.  

At present, CWC warehouse storage capacity is 125 LMT, it said. 

He also asked CWC to focus on building of cold chain storage in the country on priority basis and instructed the corporation to do Safety Audit for fire, earthquakes burglary and accidents in its all warehouses regularly, it added.
