30 colleges assessed in Nagaland

The University Grants Commission (UGC) has made National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC) for colleges and universities in the country mandatory to improve the quality of education.
Stating this, Director of Higher Education, Kohima, Dr Apeni Lotha said that a total of 30 colleges in the state have been assessed by NAAC including 11 government colleges and 19 private colleges. Speaking during the inaugural programme of Livingstone Foundation International College (LFIC), Dimapur on August 24, Dr Lotha also informed that there were 65 secular colleges in the state including 15 government colleges and 50 private colleges. However, with addition of two more private colleges- one each in Dimapur and Mon, there would now be 67 colleges functional from the current academic session.
She said both the government and private colleges were doing better because of continuous assessment and added that all colleges in the state would soon become a multi-disciplinary institution. She said that the National Education Policy 2020 would be bringing huge changes in the education system. The Director further stated that the Higher Education Department and Nagaland University is working on modalities to introduce choice based credit system by next year.
She lauded the objective of the LFIC to provide sound education respecting all culture, language and religion and expressed the hope that the college would live up to its dreams. Dr Lotha also impressed upon the teachers to emphasize on all round development of the students.
Earlier, Chairman of LFIC, Dr Andrew Ahoto Sema briefly highlighted about the history of the institution. He also called for the need to have a symbiotic relation between the government and private institutions.
LFIC Principal, Dr R K Behera in his welcome address said that the college envisages to make positive difference in the life of student community and the society in the state. He informed that the college would be initially starting with Arts and Commerce streams providing honours in various subjects.
During the programme, short speeches were also delivered by All Nagaland College Students’ Union President, Vimeyiekho Vitso and representatives from Thahekhu and Kevijau villages.
