Naga boy excels in Delhi Horse Show

Kekhriengulie Rio won three gold and two bronze medals in the recently concluded Delhi Horse Show.

DIMAPUR, APRIL 6 (MExN): It would be odd to associate the sport of horse riding with Nagaland. Equestrianism has little, if no foothold in the state and is not heard of in any quarter.  However, one Naga boy has made the state proud by excelling in this particular sport.

Kekhriengulie Rio, a student of the Assam Valley School in Tezpur has been winning laurels in horse riding since last year. A student of seventh grade, Kekhriengulie has a medal tally of five gold medals, two silver medals and two bronze medals from two editions of the Delhi Horse Show.

The young Naga Equestrian was a member of the Assam Valley school team that participated in the 28th Delhi Horse Show (All India Inter School Competition), which took place from March 28, to April 6. He won three gold medals in the disciplines of pole bending, stick and ball racing and jumping. In addition to this, Kekhgriengulie also bagged two bronze medals in the disciplines of bucket race and hex.

It may be noted that he won two gold medals and two silver medals in last year’s edition of the same event. Kekhriengulie is from Tuophema village, under Kohima district and is the son of Parliamentary Secretary for Urban Development, Zhaleo Rio.

Authorities from the Assam Valley School have expressed happiness and satisfaction with the performance of the athlete. They conveyed hope and confidence that Kekhriengulie would bring more laurels to the school in the years to come. While horse riding as a sport may seem peculiar to a society where even horses are rare, this young lad’s accomplishment’s in the sport plays a part in furthering the sporting attributes of Nagaland.
