Husband and wife of Khughutomi village under Pughoboto sub-division were reported to have been killed in a mudslide caused by heavy rainfall on October 8. The victims were identified as one Vitozhe – 60 year-old and one Vitoli – 27 year-old. The body of the wife was recovered but husband’s body is still missing.

According to a reliable source, the couple on that fateful day went out to collect banana stem in the afternoon. However, they did not return home so the family members went to the spot but there was no trace of them so they informed the village council and another search was conducted. Later, the wife’s body was recovered; her head was severed and one arm missing. The couple has four children – two sons and two daughters, who are all minors.

The source said that Khughutomi is just below the Zunheboto road – widening for two laning, which is still under construction and it is the debris cleared from the road that had caused the mudslides. “Every time road is cleared; more earth, rocks and trees are dumped below the road.

Also, villagers could not even cultivate their terrace fields as most were totally covered by mud, rocks and felled trees and irrigation channels were destroyed. And now it is killing people. This is development without vision,” the source stated.

Till filing of this report it was informed that the search for Vitozhe will continue with the help of six villages – Khughutomi, Mudutsugho, Chishilimi, Chisholimi, Khukiye Lukhai and Kilo Old.
