DIMAPUR, APRIL 10 (MExN): The Naga Women Union Manipur, All Naga Students’ Association Manipur and the Naga Peoples Movement for Human Rights South has condemned the attack on the Member of Parliament (Lok Sabha) Outer Manipur Mani Charenamei at his Imphal Fairyland residence by hurling a hand grenade inside his compound yesterday evening at around 9 pm when the MP was inside his residence.
This is the second of such attempt on the Member of Parliament. Luckily the bomb did not explode and was safely disposed off by a bomb expert team of the state police, stated a joint press communiqué issued by NWUM, ANSAM and Convenor NPMHR South.
Stating that “attack on peoples’ representatives such as Member of Parliament is a direct attack on the people and such cowardly act should be condemned by one and all”, the joint communiqué lamented that when life of such member is at threat the whole community is also at threat.
The State Government despite repeated demand has not provided adequate security coverage to the MP. The State Government should bear responsibility of any untoward happening in future, the joint communiqué stated.
Meanwhile in a separate press communiqué, the ZHRF, Delhi Cell stated that it was shell-shocked to learn that a live grenade bomb was planted in the residential premise of Mani Charenamei. “The planting of grenade bomb was nothing but a larger part of the systematic elimination of tribal leaders and high ranking officials. This planting of grenade only reminded us of the brutal assassination of Thangthuam Tunglut, IPS, IGP (Intel) on December 31, at Oinam Bazar”, the ZHRF stated while expressing deep concern about the safely and security of the Outer Manipur MP and demanded that adequate security be provided.
