Dimapur, February 21 (MExN): Shurhozelie Liezietsu today impressed upon the Nagas not to forget their roots while moving towards modernization. The Minister for Higher Education and Urban Development said that the speed of change is pervading the Naga society in all aspect of life, yet the good traditions of our forefathers must not be forgotten. Liezietsu, while speaking at the inauguration of United Naga B- Naga Colony in Dimapur this morning, added that the basis of Naga culture lies with the evolvement of generations in villages; and the attachment to family and society among Nagas is paramount.
Shurhozelie inaugurates Naga Colony in Dimapur
On the nature of urbanisation in Nagaland, Liezietsu noted gladly that even though a large number of people are migration from the rural to urban areas, they are still rooted to their rural background. He noted that many young educated people want to live in the urban with better facilities, yet most of the towns are developed in rural settings. “We are a classless society. We come from different places and settle down as a unit…we demonstrate our attachment with village life and that is something extraordinary about the Naga society,” he observed.
Liezietsu, however, lamented that even though Dimapur is a fast growing cosmopolitan city, a lot of negative aspects have emerged. “We read about kidnapping, extortion, robbery… it is in the headline everyday,” he said. He urged local leaders to work together to keep check of society. He also urged Naga Colony to live upto its name and reflect the image of a peaceful place and loving people.
The Urban Development Minister also said that the government is planning to extend its ‘Neighborhood Development Programme’ owing to its success in Kohima. He said additional funds have been proposed for next year and if everything goes well, the programme will come to Dimapur. He pledged to give the first fund received for Dimapur to the newly inaugurated Naga Colony.
Also present at the function, MLA for Dimapur-I KL Chishi, urged the Urban Development Minister to look into development issues pertaining to his constituency. Chishi pointed out that the entire Dimapur-I constituency falls under the municipal jurisdiction and no poverty alleviation or rural development schemes are applicable to the constituency. He said that atleast some areas in other constituencies of Dimapur enjoy village development funds; his constituency was solely dependent on urban development funds routed through the civic body. He said the people here are living in misery hand urged the Minister to extend possible help.
United Naga B-Naga Colony is located in Burma Camp. A monolith was unveiled to commemorate its establishment. Dimapur Municipal Council advisory members, GBs, VCCs and well wishers attended the programme.
