‘Naga society’s gradual shift in food habits and lifestyle posing a threat’

Demonstration-cum-interactive discussion on food safety issues relating to the State of Nagaland being conducted during the observance of World Safety Day at State Public Health Laboratory, Kohima on June 7.

Kohima, June 7 (MExN): The Food Safety Commissioner to Government of Nagaland, Amardeep Singh Bhatia, IAS today shared concerns that ‘Naga society is gradually shifting in food habits and lifestyle which is posing a threat.’

“It is very important to take action and regulatory authorities should take up responsibilities for creating awareness on consumption of food,” said Bhatia who is also the Principal Secretary while delivering the keynote speech during the observance of World Safety Day at State Public Health Laboratory, Kohima on June 7. 

It was organized by Food Safety Nagaland, Department of Health & Family Welfare (DoHFW) under the theme ‘safe food now for a healthy tomorrow’ on June 7, stated a press release from IEC Bureau, DoHFW Nagaland. 

“It is important to ensure food safe chain for people, animals, plants and economy so that in future we are all protected,” he said. 

It is necessary to ensure that food producers like restaurant, food chain suppliers, food stalls should know about the importance of food hygiene and the authorities should not only enforce but encourage hygiene etiquette to producers. 

Bhatia encouraged the officials to work jointly with all the available resources and to ensure safe food, healthy lifestyle and consumption habits for healthy tomorrow.

The programme also hosted demonstration-cum-interactive discussion on food safety issues relating to the State of Nagaland which was led by Khrukutolu Veswuh, Food Analyst (SPHL) and her team. 

The session demonstrated how to identify fresh/stale egg, identify contaminated water and identify food coloring in eatable produce. The Food Analyst team requested the gathering to spread awareness on food safety to prevent food borne diseases by advocating food hygiene.

Dr John Kemp, Deputy Director chaired the programme while Sendongkaba Jamir, Assistant Food Safety Commissioner, DoHFW delivered vote of thanks.
