Nagaland: 35% increase in new COVID-19 cases from past week

There was a slight spike in detection of new COVID-19 cases in Nagaland after maintaining a 5-week streak of reporting more recoveries than detection. The state reported 305 new cases against 265 recoveries during the week (September 18-24). 

Almost two-thirds of the cases from the week were detected through self/random tests.  

Further, as per the State Integrated Disease Surveillance Programme’s (IDSP) weekly COVID roundup, “A 35 percent increase in new cases was observed from the past week with increase in Dimapur, Kohima and Tuensang.” 

Mon and Zunheboto did not report a single case. Dimapur, with 148 cases, accounted for the bulk of the week’s tally, while Kohima, with 72 new cases, continued maintaining its weekly caseload below the 100-figure mark for the 5th week. Tuensang reported 37 cases after maintain single digit figures for the past one month. New cases in each of the other districts were less than 30. 

In terms of recovery, 131 COVID patients recovered in Dimapur, Kohima- 60, Mokokchung- 40, Phek-11, Wokha- 9, Tuensang- 7, Zunheboto- 4, Kiphire- 2, Mon- 1. Peren and Longleng did not report a single recovery. 

Positivity & fatalities: The weekly sample positivity rate continued to remain below 5 percent for 6 consecutive weeks.

It was 3 percent for the week (September 18-24) out of 10,209 samples. However, Dimapur (5.4 percent) and Phek (5 percent) showed an increase during the week. The positivity rate in Dimapur for September 24 was 10.6 percent. 
There were 9 deaths— 8 in Dimapur and 1 in Kohima. The IDSP said, “Among COVID-19 deaths, 60 percent had co-morbid conditions (387 out of 646 as on September 24), 19 percent (125 out of 646) did not have any and 21 percent (134 out of 646) were not known if they had any.” 

It added that 2,816 students in the 4-32 years-old category were tested positive in 2021 with 3 deaths among them.
There were 55 new admissions in COVID-19 hospitals across the state during the week (Dimapur-30, Kohima- 14, Tuensang- 6 and Mokokchung- 5). 

Vaccination: The state achieved a milestone in COVID-19 vaccination as total doses administered crossed the 10-lakh figure.  As per the IDSP, 49,216 doses were administered during the week, taking the tally to 10.17 lakh. It included 3,34,271 doses of the second shot.
