With an objective to promote regional trade and supporting local organic farmers, the Agricultural Produce Market Committee (APMC) Wokha organised the inaugural APMC Sales Day at the APMC Wokha Complex near NH-61, on July 5.
The APMC Sales Day showcased a wide range of agricultural produce, including fresh organic leafy vegetables and tomatoes from Longkhum village.

Traders from neighbouring Assam contributed a diverse selection of products such as potatoes, tomatoes, green chillies, dry fish, and livestock including hens, ducks, and piglets.
The initiative is designed to foster cross-border trade between Nagaland and Assam, providing a platform for mutual exchange of agricultural goods that are not readily available within each state.

The event was graced by SDO (Civil) Wokha, Echungbemo Erui, as the special guest. In his address, Erui underlined the importance of the market in empowering local farmers and strengthening the regional economy. Describing Wokha as the “Land of Plenty”, he stressed the significance of preserving its fertile soil and assured traders of full support from the district administration.
He further cautioned vendors against misrepresenting non-organic produce as organic, warning that such practices could harm Wokha’s reputation. Urging fair compensation for farmers, Erui appealed to the public to support the local market and ensure its sustained success.

Managing Director and CEO of the Nagaland State Agricultural Produce and Livestock Marketing Board (NSAPLMB), Jacob Yanthan, also addressed the gathering. He extended his gratitude to the participating traders from Assam, stating that the inter-state market was envisioned as a means to reduce dependence on distant markets while fostering friendship and economic cooperation between the two states. He added that future plans were in motion to further develop the APMC Wokha Complex and urged continued collaboration from all stakeholders.

Assam trader representative Sahidur Rahaman expressed optimism about the growing trade partnership and thanked the people of Wokha for their warm support. He also appealed to the public to ensure the unhindered transportation of goods between the two states.
On the inaugural day, fresh vegetables, fruits, and livestock were sold at the APMC Wokha Complex, with one truckload of goods from Assam being sold locally and another truck carrying produce from Wokha sent to Assam for sale.

The weekly market is set to become a regular fixture every Saturday from 7:00 AM onwards at the APMC Wokha Complex, aiming to provide a sustainable and vibrant trading platform for farmers and traders across state lines.
