Nagaland Muaythai team delivered a dominant performance at the 1st Northeast Regional Muaythai Championship 2026.
Dimapur, September 26 (MExN): The Nagaland Muaythai team delivered a dominant performance at the 1st Northeast Regional Muaythai Championship 2026, clinching 11 medals, six gold, two silver and three bronze at the R Dengthuama Hall, Aizawl, Mizoram.
The four-day championship, held from September 21 to 24, saw participation from athletes across all eight Northeastern states, with around 350 fighters competing across approximately 100 categories.
The Nagaland contingent was led by Hemavi Ayemi (National Coach, UMAI), H Pangmei Konyak (Team Manager), Aboto Ayemi (Team Coach), Aboli M Kinimi (Assistant Female Coach) and Moakumzük Longchar (Referee & Judge).
In the gold medal category, Lemnon L Konyak (U-24, 48 kg), Pikato Awomi (U-24, 54 kg), Niuka Chophi (U-24, 60 kg), Aputo (Elite, 48 kg), Wapang Ao (Elite, 51 kg) and Emtiramok Amri (Elite, 63.5 kg) finished on top.
Mangkhao T Konyak (Elite, 54 kg) and Manjei Konyak (Elite, 57 kg) claimed silver, while Yumahang Limbo (U-16, 57 kg), Huka Ayemi (U-24, 51 kg) and Wangtah Konyak (Elite, 71 kg) settled for bronze.
Phongmei Phom, competing in the U-24 67 kg category, also represented Nagaland but did not secure a medal.
The championship, organised by the Muaythai Association of Mizoram, was inaugurated by Mizoram Sports & Youth Services Minister Pu Lalnghinglova Hmar, who emphasised the growing popularity of Muaythai and hoped the regional event would contribute to the sport’s development in the region.
The closing ceremony was graced by Mizoram Chief Minister Pu Lalduhoma, who highlighted the growing prominence of Muaythai as a professional contact sport and the opportunities it can provide for young athletes.
The International Federation of Muaythai Associations (IFMA) described the Aizawl championship as a four-day celebration of Muaythai, youth empowerment and the values of discipline, respect, tradition and honour.
The performance reflects the growing participation and competitive development of Muaythai athletes from Nagaland and the Northeast, with the championship providing an important platform for competitive experience, exchange of technical knowledge and strengthening of regional sporting ties.
