Nagaland celebrate Major Linyu’s feat

Nagaland today accorded a high profile felicitation to Major (Dr)Neikhrietuonuo Linyu who scaled Mt. Everest last month and made the state and country proud.  In a grand felicitation programme held here this evening at Raj Bhavan, both Nagaland’s Governor Nikhil Kumar and Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio extended heartiest congratulation to the latter for bringing laurel to the country and the state in particular and termed her as a role model for others to follow in her footstep.

Linyu scaled Everest on May 25 this year becoming the first Naga to record this feat. Neikhrietuonuo, daughter of Pelhousenyu Linyu from Kohima, did her schooling from Don Bosco Higher Secondary School in Kohima and went on to complete MBBS from RIMS, Imphal after passing her PU from Kohima Science College, Jotsoma.  Major (Dr) Linyu said that seven women who were part of the expedition showed that one can achieve if there is determination, team spirit and a sense of purpose. 

“It is you who have to develop interest, build on your strength, have pride and dignity of labour,” she challenged the youngsters.
Born on 12 Nov 12 1974, Major (Dr). Neikhrietuonuo Linyu was commissioned into the Indian army in 2001. She was posted at 154 CH Zakhama and 15 Fd amb in Jammu & Kashmir. After this she had her first stint as paratrooper doctor at 60 Para Fd Hospital in Agra. She later got posted to SFF at Chakratha and then went on UN Mission in Congo (DRC). She was posted back to 60 Para Fd hospital at Agra.

In adventure activities, she took keen interest in mountaineering after her commissioning. She attended expedition like; Mt. Satapanth in 2008 as part of Bombay Sappers team, Mt. Indira Col in 2009 as part of corps of engrs women expedition where she was deputy leader of the team, Mt. Makalu in Nepal in 2009 as part of Indo- Bangladesh mountain expedition, Mt. Kang Yatse in Ladakh in 2010 where she was the team leader, Mt. Nyirangongo (Congo) as part of 301 inf. Bde in 2010. 

In January 2012 she and her team prepared for final summit by undergoing intense trial camp at Mt. Shitidhar at Manali, Himachal Pradesh and on 25th May 2012 she conquered Mt. Everest. “Her struggle and tough training is an inspiration to all the youth of Nagaland in particular and the Nation is proud of her,” said Maj Gen B S Das, SM, IGAR (N).

She has done basic sky diving course in 2007 and 2008 with IAF and IN (Naval Adventure Cell). She also represented the army command level in pistol and bagged the second position. Maj. Gen Das said adventure is part of Indian Army’s curriculum adding that it encourages challenges and thereby transforming a person to push him/herself and the team to the extremities and many a times achieve the impossible.

‘We are proud to have as adventurous from Nagaland who is a lady and has scaled ultimate heights of the world, Major. Maj.Gen. Das said. He added that her dream is to be a role model for the youth of the country and achieve excellence in whatever she does. “Her dedication to duty and her indomitable spirit has made this country proud of her and parents, who believed in good education to their children with the right values.

Earlier, Naiba Konyak , Parliamentary Secretary for Youth Resource and Sports delivered welcome address while Neikule Doulo compered the function.
