International Women’s Day was observed in Nagaland recognising and celebrating empowerment and collective action as leaders and officials highlighted the vital role played by women in shaping society while also calling for greater efforts to address challenges faced by women and girls.
Celebrated under the theme “Rights. Justice. Action. For all women and girls” on March 7 at Capital Convention Centre, the programme was jointly organised by Nagaland State Commission for Women, Department of Social Welfare, Women Resource Development, Kohima Municipal Council, SHEW-SANKALP, Mission Shakti and Nagaland State Rural Livelihoods Mission.
Speaking on the occasion as the special guest, Minister for Environment, Forest, Climate Change & Village Guards, CL John said the day is not only meant for celebration but also for recognition of the sacrifices, struggles and achievements of women in every sphere of life.
He noted that women have always been central to the social fabric of Nagaland. According to him, Naga women continue to contribute tirelessly to the progress of the state whether in agriculture fields, marketplaces, classrooms or hospitals.
Described women as the backbone of families, the strength of villages and a guiding force in churches and communities, John also highlighted the growing achievements of women in education and various professional fields.
Recalling the contributions of pioneering women leaders, he paid tribute to Rano M Shaiza, the first woman Member of Parliament from Nagaland, whose leadership and courage paved the way for future generations, and currently with two women Members of the Nagaland Legislative Assembly and one woman representing the state in the Rajya Sabha.
Emphasising the role of women in building a peaceful and progressive society, he said women are strong agents of peace, reconciliation and social reform. He added that Naga society continues to shine because of the strength, wisdom, patience and faith of its women.

At the same time, he also acknowledged that several challenges remain such as gender-based violence and unequal access to opportunities still need to be addressed collectively by society.
Referring to statistics related to gender-based violence in the state, he stressed that such violence is a violation of human rights and a major obstacle to women’s empowerment and gender equality.
He urged society to create an environment where every girl child in Nagaland can dream without fear, aim higher and confidently pursue her potential.
Meanwhile, Advisor for Social Welfare Wangpang Konyak referring to theme reminded that rights must be claimed, justice must be ensured and meaningful action must be taken, especially for women and girls who continue to face barriers in access, opportunity and equality, particularly in rural areas.
He noted that many government programmes now focus on “women-led development,” moving beyond welfare approaches to empowering women as active agents of growth through initiatives to strengthen women’s economic and social empowerment.
Through the formation of Self-Help Groups (SHGs), he maintained that women are being supported to engage in diverse economic activities while gaining access to savings, credit facilities, financial resources and skill development opportunities.
Referring to the reports from the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) which have often cited Nagaland as one of the safer states for women in India with comparatively lower crime rates, Konyak however, cautioned that the state still witness rise in crimes against women and girls over the years.
Given this reality, he called upon society to confront the issue of violence against women and urged men and boys to become active participants in changing discriminatory attitudes and ending gender-based violence. “As a society, we must ensure that women’s dignity is protected and upheld,” he said.
Appreciating the awardees for their contributions, Konyak said “When a woman gains her voice and economic strength, her family thrives, her village progresses and society as a whole moves forward.”
Director of Women Resource Development, Vilone Sakhrie and Secretary, AHoD, Social Welfare also address the gathering.
The programme also recognised the contributions of Self-Help Group achievers by the Nagaland State Rural Livelihoods Mission, municipal workers and Anganwadi workers by the social welfare department.
During the occasion, the NSCW Excellence Awards 2026 was presented to Ponglem Konyak, President KNSK while the NSCW Award 2026 was given to Apeuna Iheilung, President Zeliangrong Mipui Organisation.
