Nagaland Congress raises banner against price rise

Nagaland Pradesh Congress Committee (NPCC) joined the countrywide agitation against unprecedented rise in prices of essential commodities and petro-diesel. 

‘The agitation from July 7 to 17 will witness a series of protest against the blatant apathy of Modi government towards the plight of the people,’ said a press release issued by the Communication Department, NPCC on Wednesday. 

Congress reported that in the last two months alone, the government has hiked fuel prices on over 30 occasions and in more than 200 cities, prices of petrol have crossed Rs 100 per litre. The Modi government charges Rs 32.90 per litre excise on petrol and Rs 31.80 per litre on diesel. The government has earned over Rs 22 lakh crore in last seven years by imposing high excise duty on petrol and diesel, it alleged. 

Similarly, it stated that prices of edible oils have nearly doubled in last six months and prices of pulses have seen an unprecedented rise. Every household item has seen quantum jump in prices. “Moved by the plight of people already suffering on account of pandemic, rampant unemployment and job losses, the Congress party has launched a nationwide campaign demanding rollback in prices of petrol and diesel and check spiraling price increase of essential commodities that is going out of reach of common man,” it said.  

In Dimapur, day-1 of agitation the form of banner and sticker campaign was launched by PCC President, K Therie at Dimapur DCC office. Similarly, in Kohima, PCC Working President, Khriedi Theunuo launched the agitation program from Congress Bhavan. 

“A series of agitation in various forms has been planned for the next 10 days and we request the public to kindly extend their cooperation especially during signature campaign,” Nagaland Congress appealed. 

In the state capital Kohima, NPCC working president, Khriedi Theunuo led the formal launching programme, which will continue till July 17. The protest is in the form of posters, banners and pamphlets along with signature campaign.

Theunuo said the common people are suffering due to the unprecedented hike in prices of essential commodities, including the price of petrol and diesel amid COVID 19 pandemic. He informed that the 10-day protest is being conducted out of concern on economic suffering of the people.

Also speaking at the function here, Kohima District Congress Committee president Kevi Vizo said Congress volunteers would put up posters and banners in all the petrol pumps and strategic locations in Kohima.

Meanwhile, NPCC will be submitting a memorandum to Nagaland’s Governor RN Ravi on July 16 on the skyrocketing prices of essential commodities.
