Nagaland: ‘Cucumber Festival is a landmark’

The two-day Cucumber Festival held at Aliba village concluded on Thursday at Aliba village ground, Mokokchung District. 

The valedictory programme was graced by B Imti Tzudir, DAO & PD, ATMA, Mokokchung as the special invitee. In his speech, Tzudirsaid that the Cucumber Festival is a landmark, a history created in the Department of Agriculture. 

He congratulated the Aliba village council and ATMA Mokokchung for their efforts and also remarked that ATMA Mokokchung has the best performing officers and staff in the districts. 

He said that the cucumbers are in high demand making it an item that can be exported to other state. Tzudir also added that the department will further propagate off-season cucumber cultivation in whichever area it can be grown. 

He further encouraged the farmers to make Aliba village a Commercial hub and put the village in the map of India. 
Based on recommendation given by Aliba village council the organizing committee gave away two awards: Best Individual Cucumber Farmer award 2021 to Jungshiningsang of Aliba Village and Best Self Help Group Cucumber Cultivators Award 2021 to Longjem Self Help Group, Aliba village.

Farmers from Longleng, Wokha, Tuensang and Zunheboto also attended the two day festival where they visited the cucumber fields and exchanged farmers know-how on cucumber and other vegetable cultivation. 

The valedictory programme was chaired by Soyimkumba, President, Aliba Student’s Union.

It may be noted that local innovator late Burremba Pongen had experimented on off-season cucumber in 1984-1985 and shared his Indigenous Technical Knowledge (ITK) with other farmers, which has provided a source of opportunity and livelihood.
