Nagaland gets first Mini Gene Bank 

Mokokchung, May 25 (MExN): Mini Gene Bank under national adaption fund for Climate Change Project at State Agriculture Research Station (SARS) Yisemyong was inaugurated on May 24 by M. Ben Yanthan Director, Department of Agriculture Nagaland as chief patron, SDO (Civil) Moakumzuk as special guest in the programme. 

According to department source, this is the first gene bank in the state, with its capacity of 12,500 lt. capacity. It can also preserve 20 to 30 thousand samples and can be deposited for 10 years and RH 25 to 30 %. In Nagaland we have around 867 samples of rice they said.

Speaking at the programme, Yanthan congratulated the SARS on the success of setting up of the gene  bank and hoped that this Bank will bring change and benefit the farmers of the state. He also expected from the research station handlers to take care and maintian the gene bank properly. He called upon all to co-operate and take up the challenge together if there is any and achieve success in the department.

Special guest in the programme SDO (Civil) Changtongya Moakumzuk also congratulated the Department and SARS for the setting up of the gene Bank in the station which he said a positive, and secured setup.

Temsuinla, Joint Director, SARS spoke on experiment/trails at SARS and also highlighted on the SARS activities on safe guarding the heritage and Indigenous seeds from being lost by domination of hybrid seeds or by  climate change. A short speech was also delivered by State Co-coordinator GIZ CCANER Nagaland Dr. Cresida Jamir. The programme was chaired by Deputy Director SARS, T. Supongmar Longchar, dedicatory prayer was pronounced by Akanmongba Pastor, Yisemyong Baptist Church.
