KOHIMA, JANUARY 23 (MExN): The Department of School Education has notified multiple decisions approved by the State Level Education Committee (SLEC) in its meeting held on December 19, 2025, including provisional permission for opening of new private schools, upgradation of government schools, merger and amalgamation of schools, closure of non-functional schools and revocation of earlier orders.
Provisional permission has been granted for opening of 23 new private schools, subject to fulfilment of criteria stipulated in the Department’s guidelines notified on October 30, 2018, within two years, and adherence to standards mandated by the Nagaland State School Standards Authority. The notification is effective from the date of issue.
The schools include St Apostolic Mission Residential School, Ward 11, Khuva Road; New Ebenezer School, United Village, Ward-19; Emerald School, Ward-7; St Mary’s School, Singrijan; Patkai Valley Academy; and River Life School, Naga Colony, Burma Camp in Chümoukedima and Dimapur districts; Arete Foundation School, Padumpukhuri; Raindrops School; Wonderbeats School, Upper PWD Colony; Heartshome School, New Police Reserve, Phesama; and Nakicha Academy in Kohima district; Moria Mission Jubilee School, Longsa in Mokokchung district; Step by Step School, Lapa Lampong; Sycamore Tree School, Yannyu; El-Shaddai School, Aboi Town; Bangjum Primary School, Longzang Village; Royal School, Phomching; Shakam Brighter School, Longwa; and Bangjum Primary School, Nyahnyu in Mon district; Green Hill School, Chepoketa in Phek district; Saint Edmund’s School, Chungtor Village in Tuensang district; Bright Wave, Tokiye Town in Zunheboto district; and Shilloi Lake School, Letsam in Meluri district.
Seven government middle schools have been upgraded to government high schools with immediate effect. These are GMS Daklane and GMS Phezoucha in Kohima district; GMS Pihekhu in Niuland district; GMS Noklak Station in Noklak district; GMS Rukizu (Pfutsero) in Phek district; GMS Jalukie Town Sector B in Peren district; and GMS Tuensang Village in Tuensang district.
Merger or amalgamation of 17 government schools has been notified with effect from the academic year 2026–27. These include GPS Kisetong with GPS Kisetong Sector ‘B’ Village in Kiphire district; GPS Longmatra Town Station B with GPS Longmatra Town Station A; GPS Anatonger with GMS Anatonger; GPS KhonoThevo with GPS Chayagei in Kohima district; GMS Kruoliezou with TM GHSS; GPS High School with RGHSS, Kohima; GPS Kandinu Sector B with GMS Kandinu Upper in Tseminyu district; GPS Pangti B with GPS Pangti in Wokha district; GMS Yongchucho with GMS Sunglup; GMS Tsopo with GMS Meshangphen; GPS Yannyu Village with GMS Yannyu; GMS Pfutsero with GHSS Pfutsero in Phek district; GPS Zhavame A with GMS Zhavame; GPS ChesezuNasa with GHS Chesezu; GPS Shiponger-A with GPS Shiponger B in Shamator district; GHS New Chingmei with GMS Chingmei in Tuensang district; and GPS Meluri Town with GMS Meluri Town in Meluri district. Vacated school buildings will remain the property of the School Education Department and be used for educational purposes.
The department has also notified closure of 34 government primary and middle schools due to zero enrolment or non-functioning, effective from the 2026–27 academic session. These include GPS Old Monger, GPS Shishimi and GPS Keor in Kiphire district; GPS Yongshei B in Longleng district; GPS Anaki A in Mokokchung district; GPS Kongan B in Mon district; GPS Tohokhu in Niuland district; GPS ChesezuNasa in Phek district; GPS Yisisotha and GPS Ngazu in Meluri district; GMS Sangdak in Tuensang district; GPS Kelongru in Shamator district; and multiple schools in Wokha and Zunheboto districts, as listed in the notification.
Further, the department has revoked earlier orders issued on November 27, 2024, including revocation of the merger of GPS Industry Colony with GPS Meluri Town, revocation of the merger of the middle section of GPS/GMS Kandinu Upper with GHS Kandinu, and revocation of the down-gradation of GMS Yongkhao to GPS Yongkhao. The revocation takes effect immediately.
