The Nagaland Government today requested six weeks from the Gauhati High Court Kohima Bench (GHCKB) to carry out the necessary exercise for constituting the Customary Courts as well as the Subordinate District Customary Courts in Nagaland.
Submitting a copy of the Rules for Administration of Justice and Police in Nagaland (Fifth Amendment) Act, 2025, to the court, the Additional Advocate General informed the GHCKB Division Bench of Justice Kakheto Sema and Justice Mitali Thakuria that additional time was required to carry out the exercise and sought six weeks.
With no objection from the counsel for the petitioners, the court listed the matter for further hearing on June 25.
The court also directed that the copy of the Fifth Amendment Act be made part of the record and added that an endeavour shall be made to hear and dispose of the case on the next date.
The matter arose from a batch of petitions, with one of the key issues being the applicability of Chapter IVA of the 1937 Rules, which provides for the constitution of Customary Courts.
