As India observed its 79th Independence Day, Nagaland lost its head of state, Governor La Ganesan on August 15. He passed away in Chennai on Friday evening at 6:23 PM. He was 80.

La. Ganesan, a former Rajya Sabha MP, passed away in Chennai on Friday evening at the age of 80. He had been undergoing treatment at Apollo Hospitals for a serious head injury sustained after a fall at his residence at T. Nagar in Chennai on August 8. Despite intensive medical care and surgery, he breathed his last at 6.23 p.m.

According to hospital sources, Ganesan was found unconscious at home and rushed to the ICU. Doctors detected internal injuries caused by the fall, and although surgery was performed, his condition remained critical. Over the past week, his health continued to deteriorate until he succumbed to his injuries.

La Ganesan took oath as the Governor of Nagaland on February 20, 2023. He also served as the Governor of Manipur apart from holding additional charge of West Bengal for a brief period.

He was also a member of the Rajya Sabha from Madhya Pradesh, a senior leader of the Bharatiya Janata Party and a veteran of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh.

President Droupadi Murmu, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Nagaland Chief Minister, and a host of others condoled his demise.

President Droupadi Murmu said, “Saddened by the demise of Governor of Nagaland, Shri La Ganesan Ji. He also served as Member of Rajya Sabha and Governor of Manipur and West Bengal. During his long public life, he worked for the welfare of the people. His contribution to the development of Tamil Nadu and the country will be remembered. I extend my deep condolences to his family and admirers.”

Prime Minister Narendra Modi taking to X said wrote: “Pained by the passing of Nagaland Governor Thiru La. Ganesan Ji. He will be remembered as a devout nationalist, who dedicated his life to service and nation-building. He worked hard to expand the BJP across Tamil Nadu. He was deeply passionate about Tamil culture too. My thoughts are with his family and admirers. Om Shanti.”

Nagaland CM Neiphiu Rio in a press release said Ganesan, “served the State with unwavering dedication. He worked tirelessly to strengthen the bonds of unity and promote development in Nagaland. Despite holding the highest Office in the State, he remained simple, humble, and deeply connected to the grassroots.”

“His modest nature endeared him to the people and will continue to inspire generations. In my time of working with him, I came to know him as a man of integrity, principle, great wisdom, and moral strength — steadfast in his commitment to upholding the values of the Constitution. His life was a testament to selfless service, calm leadership, and an enduring devotion to the ideals of justice and unity,” the CM added. 

Finance Minister M Sitharaman wrote: “Shocked to hear that Governor of Nagaland, L. Ganesan is no more. Served the BJP, Tamil Nadu actively. Building the party organisation was his forte. Dedicated karyakarta and a swayamsevak till his last breath. Condolences to his family and all his followers.”

Deputy Chief Minister of Nagaland, Y Patton also took to 'X' to express his deep shock and sadness at his passing. “Throughout his journey in public life, he carried himself with dignity, humility, and an unshakeable commitment to the welfare of the people,” he stated. 

Deputy CM TR Zeliang called the former Governor a “distinguished leader who upheld the highest ideals of public service with humility, dedication, and integrity. During his tenure, he worked selflessly for the welfare of the people and was able to connect with the masses without any distinction which will be profoundly remembered.” 

Nagaland Tourism and Higher Education Minister Temjen Imna Along also condoled the death of Governor La. Ganesan. In a post on X, Along said: “Deeply saddened by the passing of Hon’ble Governor of Nagaland, La. Ganesan Ji. His dedicated service, humility, and commitment to the people will always be remembered. Heartfelt condolences to his family. May his soul rest in peace.”

7-Day State Mourning Declared

KOHIMA, AUGUST 15 (MExN): With the passing of Nagaland Governor La. Ganesan passed on August 15, as a mark of respect, the Government of Nagaland has declared a seven-day State Mourning from August 16 to 22 throughout the State.

During this period, the National Flag will be flown at half-mast on all buildings in Nagaland where it is flown regularly. There will also be no official entertainment in any State Government department during the mourning period, the government notification stated.
