Nagaland Governor La Ganesan’s legacy of service remembered

Dimapur, August 16 (MExN): Various organisations and individuals continue to mourn the demise of Nagaland Governor La Ganesan, who died at a private hospital in Chennai, on August 15 evening. La Ganesan was appointed as the Governor of Nagaland and took the oath on February 20, 2023.

Nagaland Governor La Ganesan Iyer passed away in Chennai on August 15, leaving behind a legacy of dedicated public service. A distinguished statesman, he served as the 19th Governor of Nagaland since February 20, 2023, working tirelessly for the welfare and progress of the state.

His illustrious career included tenures as Governor of Manipur and West Bengal (Additional Charges) and as a Member of the Rajya Sabha, reflecting his unwavering commitment to public life.

Nagaland Legislative Assembly Speaker Sharingain Longkumer expressed profound sorrow, stating, “on my own behalf and on behalf of the Member of the 14th Nagaland Legislative Assembly offer our deepest condolences to the bereaved family. May the Almighty grant them strength and comfort in this hour of grief, and may his noble soul rest in eternal peace.”

Advisor to the Chief Minister and Chairman IDAN, Abu Metha, described the passing of the Governor as an “irreparable loss to the nation” and to all who had the privilege of knowing him. In a message, Metha recalled his close association with the late Governor during his tenure at the Raj Bhavan in Kohima. “Over the years, we developed a warm and positive relationship, marked by mutual respect and trust,” he stated. Metha remembered their interactions, which ranged from discussions on culture, art, sport, and development, to collaborative efforts on major programmes and events in Nagaland. “From early morning breakfasts to musical evenings and dedicatory services, each occasion was enriched by his presence and wisdom,” he added. Describing Ganesan as a “fine gentleman - dignified, charming, hospitable, and kind,” Metha praised his sincerity and genuine concern for people. “His support, encouragement, and blessings will always remain a source of inspiration to me,” he noted. 

Confederation of All Nagaland State Services Employees Association (CANSSEA) remembered Governor Ganesan as a dedicated leader who served Nagaland with humility and commitment since assuming office in early 2023. His contributions and good deeds towards the welfare of the people will be remembered with respect and gratitude, the association stated. Extending solidarity to the bereaved family, CANSSEA prayed for divine comfort and strength during this difficult time. May the departed soul rest in eternal peace,” it added.

Indian Red Cross Society, Nagaland State Branch shared in the grief of the “irreparable loss.” It said that La Ganesan’s untimely demise is a great loss not only to the people of Nagaland but also to the humanitarian fraternity of the Red Cross. “His guidance and support as President of the Society in Nagaland will always be remembered with deep gratitude,” it stated. 

Janjati Shiksha Samiti (Vidya Bharati) Nagaland described the Governor’s social-political active life as an inspiration. It highlighted Governor Ganesan's simple living, sensitive nature and dedicated service to the nation. The Vidya Bharati family prayed for strength to the bereaved family to endure the loss and sought eternal peace for the departed soul.

Linguistic Minority Forum of Nagaland (LMFN) termed the demise as an “irreparable loss” for the state. LMFN remembered the Governor as “a guiding light who inspired unity, hope and togetherness.”

The forum particularly acknowledged his unwavering support in uniting linguistic minority communities, stating, “His memory will continue to inspire us to walk the path he envisioned.” Describing Ganeshan as more than just a leader, LMFN members paid homage to his legacy, with the forum collectively bowing “in deep gratitude and remembrance of a leader whose legacy will live on forever.”

Lok Janshakti Party (Ramvilas) described his passing as “a tremendous loss to the State of Nagaland.” The party highlighted how Ganesan's life journey “serves as a lesson for future generations on how to rise above hardships and challenges.” Remembering him as “a reflection of honesty and simplicity,” the party praised his kind-hearted nature and reform-oriented leadership. They also noted Ganesan's contributions to Nagaland's development during his tenure as Governor, saying his work “will always be cherished and forever be held in high regard.”

Naga Mothers’ Association (NMA) remembered him as a staunch advocate for women’s rights and a compassionate leader who stood by the communities. NMA acknowledged Ganesan’s “unwavering support” throughout the “trials and harassment on the Naga Mothers Association by certain vested interested groups that preceded the historic Municipal elections in the State.” He made Raj Bhavan accessible to all citizens and championed the rights of the underprivileged, including children at NMA’s Cradle Ridge Centre, it stated. Describing him as both “a guide and a friend,” NMA extended condolences to his family, Raj Bhavan staff, and loved ones, praying for his soul to find “eternal rest in peace.”

Naga People's Front (NPF) president Apong Pongener described Ganesan as a leader who served the state with humility, integrity and a deep sense of responsibility during his tenure. “His contributions as a statesman and Constitutional head will be fondly remembered,” he said. On behalf of the NPF and personally, Pongener extended condolences to the bereaved family.

Nagaland Gorkha Association remembered the Governor as “a humble and down-to-earth person, a friend of the poor and common people.” It stated that Ganesan was very sympathetic and concerned about for the Gorkha community, and added that they have “lost a supportive figure.” 

Nagaland Health Minister P Paiwang Konyak paid tribute to his dedicated service to the state. “Ganesan served the people of Nagaland with dedication, wisdom and humility, leaving behind a legacy of integrity and public service,” Konyak stated. On behalf of the Health & Family Welfare Department and personally, Paiwang extended condolences to the bereaved family, praying for divine strength during this difficult time. 

Nationalist Democratic Progressive Party (NDPP) described him as “a gentleman known for his humility and down-to-earth nature.” NDPP highlighted how Governor Ganesan, since assuming office in 2023, steered the state with wisdom and maturity rather than imposing his authority. It noted his exceptional dedication to public service, stating that Nagaland was privileged to have him as Governor, however brief his tenure. “His love for the Naga people was second to none and throughout his tenure, he ensured that the concerns of the people came first and foremost and is evident by his numerous visits to the far flung parts of the State.” NDPP joined the people of Nagaland in mourning the loss while extending condolences to the bereaved family. 

Officers’ Hill Colony Council (OHCC) Kohima said that the Governor was the “most revered resident of our Colony, a fatherly figure and most loved citizen of our colony. He has contributed in different capacities in all-round development of the colony. 

Sümi Hoho, remembered the Governor as “served the people of Nagaland with humility, integrity, and commitment.” The hoho said that his contributions and guidance will be remembered with respect and gratitude. Extending solidarity with the bereaved family, the tribal body said, “We join the people of Nagaland in mourning the loss of a respected leader and statesman.”

The Ao Senden remembered Ganesan as an able parliamentarian, administrator, and modest and down to earth person, and hailed him as an epitome of integrity and wisdom. Ao Senden stated, “As the head of the State, we have lost a guiding star for the development of Nagaland in all economic, social, intellectual and political spheres.” 

Nagaland state BJP President, Benjamin Yepthomi, arrived in Chennai on August 16 and paid homage to the La Ganesan. On behalf of the BJP, Nagaland, Yepthomi stated that Ganesan’s dedicated service and commitment to public life as Governor of Nagaland will be remembered with respect and gratitude. Nagaland BJP extended its sympathies to the bereaved family and joined in mourning the irreparable loss and pays tribute to the departed soul while praying for eternal peace of the departed soul.
