Nagaland govt backs Advocate General

Joint Action Committee on Women Reservation reiterates position

DIMAPUR, JUNE 24 (MExN): The Government of Nagaland has condemned the incident in the premises of the Gauhati High Court, Guwahati, on 19th June 2012, wherein K.N. Balgopal, the “learned” Advocate General of Nagaland, was according to the government “verbally abused with choicest invectives by some Members of the Joint Action Committee on Women Reservation as he was coming out of the Court room after the conclusion of the day’s hearing on Women Reservation in Nagaland Municipalities”.

A press note from the Chief Secretary Lalthara stated that the State Government fully backs and supports the Advocate General of Nagaland, who has been ably and successfully fighting many court cases on behalf of Nagaland Government, and who enjoys the full confidence of the State Government. The State Government further condemned the action of the JACWR in demanding his removal from the post of Advocate General on “frivolous ground”. “The State Government stands solidly behind the Advocate General”, stated the Chief Secretary.

Meanwhile the Joint Action Committee on Women Reservation (JACWR) has stated that it had been silently observing what it termed as “the relentless attack on the JAC members, Naga Mothers Association and other apex women organizations by civil society like the Naga Hoho and the Naga Students Federation, including the Dimapur Bar Association and the two Additional Advocate Generals making further false allegations”.

“The aftermath of the abuse and threats on Naga women leaders outside the court on the 19th June in Gauhati, High Court and the immediate reaction of civil society including lawyers to question the integrity, defame and pass judgments on women, instead of verifying the facts of the incident, has proved the complete biasness towards violence against women, even by a non Naga”, stated a press note issued by the JACWR. In this regard, the JACWR has categorically reiterated that it stands by all the facts as per the JACWR release, published in local dailies on the 20th June 2012.
