Nagaland Govt contemplating opening of Angawadi centres: HC informed

Kohima, March 1 (MExN): The Nagaland Government is contemplating the opening of Angawadi centres shortly, counsel representing the Director, Department of Social Welfare informed the Gauhati High Court Kohima Bench on March 1.

The counsel stated the same when the Bench comprising of Justice Songkhupchung Serto and Justice Devashis Baruah observed that in the past few days, the State Government have issued notifications for ‘opening educational institutions and easing restrictions in the State.’

“We have also seen that the COVID-19 infection in the State has gone down considerably,” the Bench noted.

Accordingly, Justice Serto and Justice Baruah expressed their  view that State Government should also consider opening of Angawadi centres so that the beneficiaries under the Food Security Act are better facilitated in availing their entitlements.

After the department counsel informed that the government is contemplating opening the Angawadi centres, the Bench directed the Government Advocate as well as the Council to come “with instruction as to when the State Government” is opening those centres, listing the matter again after two weeks.

The Court is hearing a Public Interest Litigation concerning the working condition of the Anganwadi Centres in the State during the pandemic as well as allegation on non-implemented the provision of Section 4(a) and 5 (1) (a) and 5 (2) 6 and 8 of the National Food Security Act, 2013.
