A total of 70.32% of candidates from Nagaland cleared the High School Leaving Certificate (HSLC) Examination 2023, reversing a declining trend for two consecutive years and producing the best performance in the last 6 years.
Out of 24,361 candidates, a total of 17,130 cleared the examination with a pass percentage of 70.32%, informed by the Nagaland Board of School Education while declaring the results on May 24.
The Board conducted the HSLC Examination 2023 from March 10-22.
The pass percentages during the five previous examinations were 64.69% (2022), 69.42% (2021), 70.03% (2020), 68.29% (2019), and 66.01% (2018).
Girls outdo boys again
Meanwhile, repeating past feats, girl candidates once again outperformed boys in the HSLC examination, both in absolute numbers and pass percentage, as well as the number of persons in the top-20 list.
According to the NBSE, a total of 9,350 girls cracked the examination compared to 7,780 boys, and in the top-20 list, out of 99 candidates, 66 were girls and only 33 were boys. The pass percentages for girls and boys respectively were 71.03% and 69.47%.
With a percentage of 99%, Christy Paul Mathew of Don Bosco Hr.Sec.School,Dimapur topped HSLC, followed closely by Arti Kumari of Ram Janaki Hr.Sec.School,Dimapur at 98.50%.
Sneha Das of Little Flower School, Chümuokedima was on third with pass percentage of 98.33%, while SD Jain Higher Secondary School, Dimapur’s Roshni Gupta was on fourth at 98.17%
Rounding up the top-5 with 98% each were Supriya Saha of Pranab Vidyapith Higher Secondary School ,Dimapur; Awantika Kumari of Christian Higher Secondary School,Dimapur; and Amit Yadav of Ram Janaki Higher Secondary School, Dimapur.
140, including 28 Govt schools, secure 100%
The pass percentage of both government and private schools increased considerably in 2023. For government schools, the pass percentage increased from 36.62% in 2022 to 49.13% in 2023, while during the same period, it increased from 82.08% to 91.15% for private schools.
On a positive note, the number of schools securing 100% pass percentage increased from 90 in 2022 to 140 schools in 2023.
Out of these, 112 were private schools and 28 were government schools. After showing a 50% decline to 12 in 2022, government schools with 100% pass percentage more than doubled to 28.
In terms of district-wise performance for government schools, Kohima district topped the table with a percentage of 73%, followed by Mokokchung and Phek districts at 70% and 63% respectively. Shamator district was at the bottom with 6%.
In respect to private schools, Noklak district is at the top with a percentage of 97%, followed by Kohima at 94%. The number of candidates securing 80% and above in aggregate is 2,716, out of which 61 candidates were from government schools.
While the number of schools with 'zero/nil results' declined from 34 in 2022 to 24 in 2023, all schools with such results were government schools.
