DIMAPUR, JUNE 4 (MExN): In wake of efforts to make Nagaland a plastic free-state, the Earth Friendly Generation (EFG) in collaboration with Naga Hub has brought out leaf based eco friendly packaging products as an alternative to single use plastics. 

A press note from the environmental group informed that the initiative is being supported by the World Wildlife Federation (WWF). 

EFG aims to supply plates and cups made out of leaves and other packaging leaves twice in a week in Kohima and Dimapur. The products can also be made available on a pre-paid order system. 

Explaining their supply chain process, EFG informed that vector and banana leaves are procured from “expert farmers who are renowned in the market.” “It is one of the best traditional practices owning to their features such as enriched nutrients, high freshness, have delectable taste and are disease free,” it said. 

“These leaves are highly available in our local area and are the best way to replace using plastics for packaging in business sectors. Our prime objective is to satisfy customers by offering the top range of leaves within a stipulated time-frame and make Nagaland Plastic Waste Free Zone,” the press note stated. 

It added that the leaf based products are 100 percent biodegradable, are more hygienic and also provides a “refreshing taste.”  

Plates, cups and spoons made out of wild banana leaves are marked at prices ranging to Rs 2.50 to Rs 5 per piece, while the same products made out of vector leaves are marked at a range of Rs 5 to Rs 8.
