Nagaland Medical College: HC forms inspection team after DoHFW shows 80% work progress

The Gauhati High Court Kohima Bench, on March 15, reconstituted an Independent Committee to the inspect the ‘verify’ the submission by the Department of Health and Family Welfare (DoHFW), which among others, claimed that work in progress for Nagaland Medical College building is 80%.

“To verify the veracity of the affidavit, particularly with regard to the status report of the Medical College building we constitute an Independent Committee consisting...Thereafter, the Independent Committee shall file the report by way of affidavit before this Court,” stated the order issued by the Division Bench of Justice LS Jamir and Justice Kakheto Sema on Wednesday. 

Earlier, the DoHFW through the Secretary filed an affidavit dated March 15 wherein the department put the status report of the new Medical College building at 80% work progress.

In the same affidavit, the Department also informed it had written to the State Government on March 3 for creation of 342 posts of teaching and non-technical staffs.

Accordingly, the Bench directed the Additional Advocate General representing the Government of Nagaland to take instructions as to what steps have been taken pursuant to March 3 letter by the DoHFW.

Meanwhile, the Independent Committee constituted on March 15 comprised of the Registrar, GHC Kohima Bench; Joint Registrar (Judicial), GHC Kohima Bench; TB Jamir, Advocate; Tongpok Pongener, Advocate; Joshua Sheqi, Advocate; Apila Sangtam, Advocate.

The Committee was directed have an inspection of the Medical College on March 22 in the presence of  Neiteo Koza, learned counsel for the petitioners; ZN Ngullie, Central Government Counsel; N Mozhui, counsel for DoHFW; and Principal Director, DoHFW. 

The Bench listed the next hearing of the batch of Public Interest Litigation (PIL) pertaining to the Medical College project as well as infrastructures, workforce and other amenities in the district hospitals, health centres and other health related issues, on March 29.
