Shamator, January 6 (MExN): MLA and Chairperson of the NLA Committee on Environment and Climate Change, Achumbemo Kikon, has expressed concern over water scarcity and cautioned against indiscriminate boring of wells, which he said was leading to the drying up of traditional water sources.
Speaking to district officials in Shamator on Monday, he urged the administration to prioritise natural water sources, rainwater harvesting and planned water distribution, while sensitising the public about the long-term hazards of over-extraction of groundwater.
Highlighting climate change impacts, Kikon said erratic rainfall patterns were now being felt locally and called for greater public awareness and administrative preparedness. He noted that environmental issues were no longer distant concerns but had reached people’s doorsteps, requiring immediate and collective action.
‘Make Shamator a model eco-friendly township’
He also stressed the need to develop Shamator into a model, eco-friendly township, stated an update received here. During the discussion with Deputy Commissioner, Chubatemjen and other officers, Kikon emphasised coordinated efforts between the administration, elected representatives and the public for planned growth.
He said the newly-developed Shamator town should be built better than older towns with a special focus on cleanliness, scientific waste disposal, reduced smoke and ash generation, and environmentally sustainable practices.
The MLA urged officers posted in the district to leave behind a positive legacy through good governance, transparency and public cooperation, assuring them of support from elected representatives, particularly in maintaining law and order and in addressing any issues requiring political intervention.
Kikon reviewed issues related to human-animal conflict, river management and fishing practices, calling for sustainable use of natural resources. He stressed the need to prevent pollution of rivers and to regulate fishing and hunting based on seasonal and community resolutions to protect biodiversity.
He asked district officials to formally submit their key requirements, particularly related to water and energy, to the concerned departments, with a copy marked to him, promising to raise these issues at the government level.
The MLA also pointed out that essential services and resources should not be affected by the absence of local body elections, adding that a district must receive its due facilities regardless of electoral delays.
He concluded by urging officers to renew their commitment in the New Year and work towards making Shamator a model district.
Separately, Kikon interacted with the Shamator Town Public Forum and later held discussions with representatives of the 11 Wards and 2 colonies, highlighting the importance of public cooperation and community participation.
